Each principal’s contract documentation gives reference to Performance Review, something along the lines of the following statements.
You are required to participate in performance reviews during the life of this Agreement, as required by the Council as follows:
a. After the first 12 months of your appointment, the School/College Board/Council will undertake an internal Principal review;
b. At the commencement of your 3rd year of appointment, the School Council will arrange for a formal appraisal. This review will be undertaken in accordance with the principles developed by Lutheran Education Australia and endorsed by the Lutheran Schools Association/LESNW, in force and applicable from time to time; and
c. The School Council/Board reserve the right to undertake any other performance review from time to time, including but not limited to, annually, to ensure that you are performing your duties at the most effective level, to the satisfaction of the School Council/Board.
Over the past two years, the process described in (b) above has not been fully implemented whilst LEA has been undertaking a national review of principal appraisal processes. As this national review initiative will be continuing throughout 2018, LESNW will reinstate the process as outlined in (b), based on the purpose described below.
The LESNW Professional Capabilities for Principals define the role of a principal in a Lutheran school context and describe the professional practice of principals in a common language.
The LESNW Principal Review process will use these Capabilities to:
- provide a framework for professional learning
- guide self-reflection, self-improvement and development
- guide the management of self and others.
Principals that are in the third year of their initial contract and those who were scheduled for the 3-year review cycle in 2017 will undertake a review this year. Contact with these principals and the Chairs of Council/Board will be made soon.
