New Independent Board Member: We welcomed Emily Haar to our LESNW Board at our meeting this week. Emily is a HR Lawyer with a background in the Lutheran Church and the Lutheran Education System and we are grateful for the skills and knowledge she will bring to our association through this role. We are still seeking one more Independent appointment (and through employing a skills matrix of our board members) we are identifying what our needs are.
Strategic Planning: Our Board has endorsed engaging Dr Richard Owen to lead us through the next phase of Strategic Planning for our association. Richard will be known to many of you through the ABSL programme we have been undertaking as an association. Richard’s work with us will begin in November.
Recent change to ATO ruling on Superannuation on Leave Loading: This matter has been on the agenda for a while now and we have gained greater clarity of the issues and requirements as time has evolved. Our Board spent considerable time on this matter and John will soon be communicating the landscape and requirements with this. While Business Managers have met and discussed the topic it will be important to that Principals are conversant with the issues as well.
National School Resourcing Board: Representatives from our association meet today (Wednesday 31st July) as part of a consultative process as the NSRB review their policies and practices. We thank those who have given their time to represent our association: Paul Bert, Brad Richmond, Roger Anderson, Kevin Richardson, John Proeve and myself.
Constitution Templates: some very minor changes have been made to our model constitutions in line with Learning Community requests, mainly around quorums and board/council make up.
School Council/Board Communication: It was agreed by the Board that LESNW will provide more information directly to Council Chairs as well as principals and leaders, including the Governance Corner report in News4Leaders. Increasingly it is becoming clear that we are well served by ensuring our learning community Boards/Councils are engaged and conversant with the broader picture of Lutheran Education.
Please feel free to contact me over any of these (or other LESNW governance matters) and I look forward to catching up with many of you at the upcoming spiritual retreat at Port Lincoln.
