It seems that the more we immerse ourselves in the Australian Curriculum the richer and deeper the outcomes for our students and teachers become. While there are subject areas that have been with us for some time, the curriculum continues to evolve and grow – and as it does the need for quality ongoing professional development and collaboration grows with it. The new expectations around Technologies and STEM are the most recent examples.
Curriculum leaders from a number of our IB PYP schools recently identified their own need to continually grow their knowledge and understanding in leading teachers who have to attend to the requirements of both the PYP and ACARA. This has resulted in an intention to collaborate together to share their knowledge, strategies and learning vision as well as a recent workshop meeting to ‘get things started’. The first meeting was very productive with the PYP Coordinator from Redeemer sharing a process of reviewing the Programme of Inquiry against the Achievement Standards in the Australian Curriculum. There are plans to meet again early next year to discuss effective ways of reporting this information to parents and caregivers.
The first meeting held last week at the LESNW office was exactly what you would expect when you bring capable and passionate leaders together who have a heart for learning. Ideas and strategies flowed and the ‘how’ of blending the PYP authentically with ACARA requirements began to emerge. The power of collaboration!
This is not a closed group and the discussions need to continue. If you would like to be involved, please let Mignon know and you can be part of these outcomes focussed sessions.
